Thought for the week - To Risk

clock March 29, 2009 12:31 by author Michele

TO RISK

To laugh is to risk appearing a fool,
To weep is to risk appearing sentimental.

To reach out to another is to risk involvement,
To expose feelings is to risk exposing your true self.

To place your ideas and dreams before a crowd is to risk their loss,
To love is to risk not being loved in return.
To hope is to risk despair,
To try is to risk failure.

But risks must be taken because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing;
The person who risks nothing, does nothing, has nothing, is nothing.

He may avoid suffering and sorrow,
But he cannot learn, feel, change, grow or live.

Chained by his servitude he is a slave who has forfeited all freedom;
Only a person who risks is free.

The pessimist complains about the wind;
The optimist expects it to change ...

And the realist adjusts the sails.

~By William Arthur Ward

Wishing you a week of wonderful sailing!

Newsletters - March 2009: Managing Time, honouring you

clock March 26, 2009 12:13 by author Michele

Hello,

Well we have now celebrated the Autumn Equinox (and the Spring Equinox for those above the Equator), so officially the change of seasons has arrived. Do you feel the crispness in the morning air? Have you noticed the trees changing colour? Take note of this glorious time of year and use it to change the patterns in your own life.

Someone remarked the other day: “We live so far away that after work you just want to get into your car and get home".

I have another suggestion: Book a massage (anything from 30 to 60 minutes) on your way home from work. While everyone else is frustrated in the traffic, you can relax and let go and de-stress on a massage bed. This will allow you to miss the rush hour and probably arrive home at the same time you normally do - refreshed and relaxed and able to give more time to yourself and others.

Have a great month!

The dilemma of choice

We live in a world of unlimited choice but limited time and energy. The hour that we spend on one activity could alternatively have been spent on a myriad of other chores, tasks or choices that are constantly vying for our attention. The key dilemma is choosing how to spend your time and energy. How we take care of ourselves on a daily basis will determine the quality of our health, our well-being and our lives.

Choosing what benefits you and managing your time

The biggest and most significant promise that I ask you to make is a tough one for many of us, especially if we’re always taking care of and giving to others.

The opera singer Jessey Norman said, “Problems arise in that one has to find a balance between what people need from you and what you need from yourself.”

I would encourage you to take care of yourself first, so that you have the resources to take care of or be there for others. Though initially this sounds self-centered, it makes sense when you consider the alternative of becoming completely spent. That’s “spent” as in “chewed up and spat out”.

Standing strong in the resolution to be true to oneself is non-negotiable. Backing out of it isn’t an option. Actually it is an obligation worth fighting for, even at the risk of putting some things or people off. At least until you’re ready to consider adding more to your to-do list.

But, before you agree to do another favour, task or project, consider starting every morning with the most wonderful question of ‘What will honour me today?”

You deserve that kind of self respect. Faith Popcorn says, “After more than a decade of virtuous self improvement, we’re sick of being good, eating less, drinking less, saving money. It’s time for self indulgence, be it treating yourself to expensive perfume or staying in bed late on Sunday”.

Ask, listen, and do what you need to do to honour you.

Thought for the week - IT COULDN'T BE DONE

clock March 22, 2009 18:11 by author Michele
IT COULDN'T BE DONE Somebody said that it couldn't be done, But he with a chuckle replied That "maybe it couldn't," but he would be one Who wouldn't say so till he'd tried. So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin on his face. If he worried he hid it. He started to sing as he tackled the thing That couldn't be done, AND HE DID IT. Somebody scoffed: "Oh, you'll never do that; At least no one ever has done it"; But he took off his coat and he took off his hat, And the first thing we knew he'd begun it. With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin, Without any doubting or quiddit, He started to sing as he tackled the thing That couldn't be done, AND HE DID IT. There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done, There are thousands to prophesy failure; There are thousands to point out to you, one by one, The dangers that wait to assail you. But just buckle in with a bit of a grin, Just take off your coat and go to it; Just start to sing as you tackle the thing That "cannot be done," and YOU'LL DO IT. Edgar A. Guest (1881 - 1959) Wishing you a “get down to your dreams” week!

Thought for the week - Each Life Affects Another

clock March 15, 2009 18:11 by author Michele
We may not always realize That every thing we do, Affects not only our lives But touches others, too! For a little bit of thoughtfulness That shows someone you care, Creates a ray of sunshine For both of you to share. Yes, every time you offer Someone a helping hand ... Every time you show a friend You care and understand ... Every time you have A kind and gentle word to give, You help someone find beauty In this precious life we live. For happiness brings happiness And loving ways bring love; And Giving is the treasure That contentment is made of. By Amanda Bradley Wishing you a giving and receiving week!

Thought for the week - STORMS...BRING OUT EAGLES

clock March 8, 2009 09:27 by author Michele
STORMS...BRING OUT EAGLES When the "storms of life" Gather darkly ahead, I think of these wonderful words I once read ... And I say to myself As threatening clouds hover, "Don't fold up your wings And run for cover." But like the eagle, Spread wide your wings And soar far above The troubles life brings. For the eagle knows That the higher he flies, The more tranquil and brighter Become the skies. And there is nothing in life We were ever asked to bear That we can't soar above On the wings of a prayer. And in looking back over The storm you passed through, You'll find you gained strength And new courage, too. For in facing life's storms With an eagle's wings, You can fly far above Earth's small, petty things. Wishing you a week of wondrous flight!

Thought for the week - The Ballerina Who Gave in Too Easily

clock March 1, 2009 05:46 by author Michele

The Ballerina Who Gave in Too Easily

There was once a young ballerina who had taken ballet lesson all through her childhood. She wanted to be a prima ballet dancer but she wanted to be sure that she had the talent. When a ballet company came to town, she went backstage after the performance and spoke to the ballet master.

“I want to be a great ballet dancer but I don’t know if I have the talent” she said.

“Dance for me” the master said. After a minute or two, he shook his head and said “No, no, no, you don’t have what it takes to be a great ballerina.”

The young woman went home heartbroken. She tossed the ballet slippers into the closet and never wore them again. Instead she got married, had children. When the kids are old enough, she took a part time job manning a cash register at a corner shop.

Years later, the same ballet company came into town. She attended it and on the way out, she ran into the same old ballet master who was then in his eighties. She reminded him that they had spoken before. She showed him photos of her children and told him about the corner shop job that she is doing now. And then she asked “There is just one thing that really bothered me. How could you tell me that I didn’t have what it takes to be a great ballerina?”

“Oh, I barely looked at you when you danced, that’s what I told all of them who came to me” he said.

“But…but, that’s unforgivable! You have ruined my life, I could have been a great ballet dancer!” she cried.

“No, no…I don’t think so, if you have what it takes, you wouldn’t have paid any attention to what I said.” The old ballet master said.

Well, whose fault is it anyway?

Never, never, never give in whatever you do. Sir Winston Churchill
